What is OMIKUJI?

おみくじって、なあに？

 

You can pick or drew “Omikuji” in Shinto shrines or temples all across Japan.Omikuji is a written divination about your near future on a piece of paper,which is a prediction from the gods.You can think of it as a kind of fortune telling.It used to be called “Mikuji” ,after that, we put an honorific word”O” on the front of the name. Omikuji has two different types of Kanji characters between the shrine’ s one and the temple’s one.Both Kanji have many strokes,which impress the politeness and seriousness.
When Nyapan finds Omikuji in shrines or temples, I always pick it.I think women who like fortune telling do the same thing!
I enjoy seeing what it tells me about my fortune and
friends, and as a result of it ,we show it off or make fun of each other^^ This is a part of fun by checking if you are lucky or unlucky with friends.
Omikuji fortunes are divided into different levels of luck and misfortune.I show you the list below:
・大吉 Daikichi :Excellent luck ・吉 Kichi:Good luck
・中吉 Chukchi:Middle luck・小吉 Shokichi:A little luck・末吉 Suekichi:future luck・凶 Kyo:Bad luck
If you get”大吉Daikichi”, you’re surely”Super lucky!!” with loud laughter.But if you get ”凶Kyo”,you’re unhappy and give a tsk-tsk.And Omikuji shows not only those results but also shows your fortune in detail, like “Will my dream come true?,Will the person I'm waiting for come? , Am I able to find things I lost? Is traveling good? ,Can I marry?” and so on.There are cases,
even if you get the excellent luck of “大吉Daikich”, it sometimes tells you negative aspects,such as “it’s hard to find a missing thing”, “a person never comes though you are waiting”.On the other hand, the bad luck of ”凶 Kyo” sometimes tells you good things like “ your hope will come later”, so that you can find a little hope.In short, you should read its contents.
That said,when I get ”凶 Kyo”,my friends cheer me up with grinning “Getting 凶 Kyo is a rare case, so you should think it might be the luck of the draw!” .…then I say them”I don't want to use up all my luck for something like this!”. My grandmother often told me that the middle luck would be better for the degree of your luck, everything in moderation”.But I want the excellent luck!When I’m disappointed, my friends suggest to try it again.But I decide to pick Omikuji one at a time.Because I’m scared if I pick ”凶 Kyo” again…

I enjoy seeing what it tells me about my fortune andfriends, and as a result of it ,we show it off or make fun of Anyway, I will explain how to pick Omikuji now.There are two traditional ways.One is that there are folded papers in a Omikuji box, and you draw one from the box.The other is that you shake a tubular box(relatively heavy) full of numbered sticks called Mikuji-bo. When one stick pops out at a time, read the number on the the stick. Then take a paper from the drawer with your number or take it to the reception.The Omikuji fee is from about 100yen to 300yen.You can find a coin box near the Omikuji place and you put coins in to it yourself.Or, sometimes there is a case of paying the fee at a reception.If you drew a “大吉 Daikichi :Excellent luck” you can take it home.If you drew the other fortunes,you tie it to a tree, which is provided in a specific spot to tie in shrines or temples.There also are unique types of Omikuji all over Japan.For instance, picking it at vending machines, hooking it from a case shaped like a fish by a rod, a paper in a case shaped like a fox, etc..you can find interesting ones.You may or you may not have the answer,it’s in the lap of the gods.But I can’t stop picking Omikuji♪Is it like being addicted to card games??　I recommend you try it to make memories in Japan.Even if you pick  the“凶 Kyo:Bad luck”Omikuji, just try it again!That’s it!
日本では、神社やお寺で「おみくじ」をひくことができます。白い小さな紙には神様からの吉凶のメッセージが書いてあります。分かりやすく言えば、一種の占いのようなもの。そもそもは「みくじ」とも呼ばれていたのが、「くじ」に尊敬語になり、そこに前置詞の「み」がついたそう。漢字で書くと、神社では「御神籤」、お寺では「御仏籤」と、さらに丁寧で厳粛さが漂う画数の多さになっています。
ニャパンはお寺や神社でおみくじがあれば必ずひきます。占い好きの女性ならきっと同じはず！　おみくじを引いて、友人同士でわあわあ比べ合う、自慢し合う、ののしり合うのはお約束（笑）。おみくじに一喜一憂するのが楽しいのです。
おみくじには、「大吉」「吉」「中吉」「小吉」「末吉」「凶」があります。（半吉や大凶もあるところもあります）。もちろん大吉が出れば「スーパーラッキー！」。高笑いをこらえ切れません。そして、「凶」がでると「ちっ」と舌打ちし不機嫌な自分を隠し切れない。ですが、おみくじの中には、願望が叶うか、病気が治るか、失せものがみつかるか、待ち人がくるか、旅行はどっちの方角にいけばいいか、結婚はできるか？　お金が儲かるのか？　といった日々の知りたい細かな運勢についての吉凶も記されています。大吉なのに「失もの」「出づ」「待ち人」「来ず」とため息を誘うコメントもあるんです。たとえ「凶」でも「ぐわんも、のちに叶うべし」と若干の希望の光が添えられていることも！（この「願」が「ぐわん」と昔の読み方で書かれているのもノスタルジックでグッとくる）つまり、中身の方が大事。けれど、大体の場合、大吉が出た人は凶を引いた友人に「凶なんてめった出ないから、却って縁起がいいかもよ～」と根拠のない慰めの言葉で傷口に塩を塗ってきますよね。そう励まされた暁には「こんなところで運を使いたくないもんっ」と毒づく訳です。「中吉ぐらいの運で丁度いいのよ。欲張っちゃダメ」とニャパンはよく祖母から言われたものですが、やっぱりどうしたって大吉がいい！　凶が出て落ち込んでいると「もう1回引けばいいぢゃん」と励まされることもしばしばですが、「また凶がでたら……」という恐怖に怯え、1度に1回しか引かないことをニャパンは己の掟としております。
さて、おみくじの引き方を説明しましょう。ポピュラーなのは2種類。ひとつは、折りたたまれたおみくじが専用の箱の中に入っていて、そこから1枚ひくパターン。もうひとつは、筒状の箱（けっこう重い）を振って、小さな穴からでた棒（みくじ棒と呼ばれています）を1本出します。そこに書いてある数字のおみくじを、受付の人から受け取るか、用意された引き出しから自分で取り出します。料金は100円～300円。おみくじのあるところの近くにお金を納める箱がありますが、受付に直接渡す場合もあります。大吉は持って帰ってOK！　それ以外はお寺や神社の境内の木の枝やおみくじ専用のみくじ掛けに結びつけます。

おみくじをひくには自動販売機型など面白い形が全国各地にあります。鯛の型を釣り上げる、キツネ、鹿、鴉の中におみくじが入っていたり。当たるも八卦当たらぬも八卦。
でも、おみくじをひくのは、やめられない止まらない♪　これをグローバルに説明するとすれば、ソリティアが揃うまでやる。揃ってもまたやる。そんな感じでしょうか？　日本の旅にはおみくじは必須。もしも、せっかくの旅行中に「凶」が出ても、「もう1回ひけばいいぢゃん」(^－^)。
